Fragmentations Quadrats

Fragmentations are works that can be altered by the viewer using magnets embedded in the wood. Each magnetic fragment can be removed and/or repositioned in specific areas of the work.
This work is modelled on the process of plant abscission, through which a plant naturally separates from one of its organs, such as a leaf or branch.
The square format refers to the quadrat, a sampling square used in vegetation studies. The magnets are embedded in the wood according to the positions of the different plants recorded within a quadrat at a specific location. The work thus becomes a map, an invisible archive of plant life.
The work explores the living architecture of plants: the ways in which they organise themselves within space. By manipulating the fragments, the viewer has a physical experience of detachment and dispersal.
In terms of materiality, the fragments are made from materials that have been cut, hammered or even burnt, evoking points of intensity and resonance. As for the wooden support, I carve into the wood, searching for paths of wandering within the material, in an attempt to escape.
